Petal-shaped lens hoods often protect better than non-petal (round) types. This is because petal-style hoods take into account the aspect ratio of the camera's film or image sensor, and so the angle of view is greater in one direction than the other. The addition of a lens hood can help prevent lens flare, the circles of light that can accompany images where a strong light source is just outside the frame. These types of lens flares occur when indirect light rays pass through the front lens elements but don't make it all the way through to the image sensor or film. Lens hoods not only block side glare but also augment the protection provided by filters to the lens surface and ring.
